Colombia, Uruguay o Brasil ya tienen incorporada la lengua de signos en sus sistemas educativos. No sucede lo mismo en Perú... de momento. Irene García Benavides, una experta de la Facultad de Letras de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, comenzó a explorar este campo.
WASLI. Scenes from Segovia. In Peru there is a negative perception of deafness, in that it is a mentally disabling condition that leaves it’s suffer not requiring education. If a deaf person is born to a hearing family, they will have no access to sign language at all. Interpreters are only recognised in Court settings, and as such the deaf person will not have any access to interpreters in the Police stations, therefore, they often end up at court on wrong charges. There is no official interpreter association.

Ni mucho menos se han realizado los estudios suficientes al respecto. Pero en naciones como Colombia y Uruguay, por citar algunos ejemplos cercanos, sí se estudia la lengua de señas del país de manera profunda.
