Minister of Human Services and Social Security Priya Manickchand today made a commitment that all public programmes conducted and facilitated by her Ministry will have an interpreter to assist persons with hearing impairment.

I read with dismay, a report in a section of the media about the alleged stabbing of a youth by a young man identified as being deaf. From that report, it was a clear case of the communication barrier which exists between the silent world of the deaf and the hearing world of the rest of the population being the root of the unfortunate incident.

In 2003 the Ministry of Education appointed a SEN specialist to coordinate efforts to include children with disabilities in education and some achievements have been made. However progress has been limited because of a lack of human resources. By sharing your expertise in special education and experience of working with deaf children, you'll enable the teachers to provide relevant and quality education to deaf children in Guyana, ensuring they receive a better start in life.

NDCS. (2004, April 4). Social inclusion project for deaf children. The project aims to train 30 deaf and 20 hearing children in sign language. This will encourage integration and will improve the communication skills of both groups. Deaf awareness of the hearing children will also be improved. Training will also be held for parents, carers and other family members which will focus on sign language and other issues surrounding deafness. A deaf club will be established and this will organise a deaf awareness week

Training at Camp Wilderness. Scroll down to "Teaching Sign Language to Deaf Children": The Guyana Community Based Rehabilitation Programme (GCBRP) has begun a oneyear training programme aimed at teaching sign language to deaf children in Guyana as acomponent of a project aimed at increasing the capacity of deaf children to be socially integratedinto community life. The project is funded by the U.K-based organisation, the International DeafChildren Society.
