Hagiyama. (2007, May 21). First Sign Language-Interpreted Conference Held at the FNCC. The sight of hundreds of raised hands turning in and out--the American Sign Language gesture for applause--was a common one at an SGI-USA Buddhist study conference on the Writings of Nichiren Daishonin from May 18-21, 2007, at the Florida Nature and Culture Center (FNCC) where sign language interpretation was offered for the first time. Participants enjoyed the "sign of the day," a brief lesson in how to sign terms SGI members commonly use such as "chanting" and "enlightenment."

Kam, R. (2007, May 19). Boss with a big heart for the less fortunate. For the last eight years, he has been spending every alternate Sunday at the Buddhist temple in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, lecturing on moral education to a class of hearing impaired adults.

Livadas, G. (2003, April 16). Cultural crash course cut short. Sherpa was 9 years old when Irene Taylor Brodsky, a Brighton native, visited Nepal to write about the significant deaf population there. Sherpa was pictured in her book. Years later, a California teacher on a spiritual quest visited Nepal and recognized Sherpa from the book. He bought a plane ticket for Sherpa so he could visit the United States and teach other deaf people about Buddhism.

Training for deaf students. Our temple kept the gate wide open to welcome 70 deaf students, teachers, translators from Rajsuda College, Mahidol University. This is the first batch of graduates from Rajsuda College, most of them have hearing deficiency.

World Around You. (1998, Jamuary/February). Life looks Up for Deaf people at the top of the world. Irene Taylor, a hearing American daughter of deaf parents who likes to backpack and hike, traveled around the world to take pictures of deaf people. Irene went to Nepal, a small country near India and China. Here is some of what she found.

Yoshida, S. A bridge from a soundless world. When I was four, my voice training started at a school for deaf-mute children. It took me almost two years to master pronunciation of the 50 sounds in the Japanese alphabet. Children in my neighborhood bullied me because of my physical disability, and I knew my mother was really upset by this. I could barely pronounce "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo," the key phrase of our Buddhist practice, by the time I was five.

GNOSTICISM

[A belief system] originated in what is now the Middle East and Greece during pre-Christian times. The movement has been composed of many groups with differing beliefs. One common concept is that there are two Gods: one Supreme Father who is from the "good" spirit world, and one Demiurge (the Jehovah in the Bible) who created the evil material world. Salvation comes through knowledge and liberation from the material, earthly world to attain a higher level of spirituality. Many Gnostic sects were the victims of genocide by the Christian Church. The movement lives on today and is growing in numbers.2

HINDUISM

The third largest religion in the world, after Christianity and Islam. It has about 750 million followers and is largely concentrated in India and Sri Lanka. Hinduism does not have a single founder, a specific theological system, a single system of morality, or a central religious organization. It consists of "thousands of different religious groups that have evolved in India since 1500 BCE." [Karen Armstrong, "The Battle for God," Knopf, (2000).]2
